What is the best way to choose a point in a neighborhood of a given point?
I’m programming a Game Engine for a 2D game using C++. In this engine I have to make some considerations and choices about points which are “the right one”, but I’m not sure what the best approach is for that kind of problem.
Let’s say I have a 2D space where the player is, say, on point (0,0). I want the player to move around in this space and when the player moves (generally by the key presses), I want to “select” some points in the neighborhood of this point (0,0) in order to determine the best one for the player to move to.
Are there any good algorithms to choose a point (0,0) from a point (x1,y1), in order to choose the point in the neighborhood of this point which is more “worth-moving” to?
I’m thinking about choosing a random point, finding its distance to (0,0), and calculate the probability of the point being in the neighborhood of (0,0).
Any suggestions?

There are basically two ways to determine the point to move to.
If the space is non-compact, there are basically two possibilities. If you can cover the entire space with a finite number of convex sets (hulls) that are guaranteed to intersect the neighborhood of (0,0), you can easily sample the space by randomly picking one of those sets.
If the space is compact, but the neighborhood is not, you can use the spherical law of cosines. Your space is the unit sphere, and the neighborhood is a disc around (0,0). To sample the space, you can use the great circle principle: a random point on the sphere is a random point on the disc. (This is what the Law of Cosines is all about, after all).
